I hope your Monday has been off to a wonderful start!
I wanted to touch base a little on one of my favourite products, Coconut oil, and a few of the great things it has to offer... I love that it's so multi purpose... ofcourse it's important to remember everything in moderation.
Take a look at a few of these awesome perks!
Coconut oil contains short
term medium-chain saturated fatty acids (MCFA) - What does consuming MCFA fats
in coconut oil mean for your body? Our body metabolises these fats in the
liver, immediately converting this into energy (fuel for the brain and muscle
function) rather than it being stored as fat.
Easy Digestion
If you suffer from poor
digestion or tummy bloating try adding coconut oil to your diet. Coconut oil
has been found to benefit digestive disorders including irritable bowel
syndrome and microbial related tummy bugs. Fatty acids in coconut oil contain
anti microbial properties, which have a soothing affect on bacteria, candida,
or parasites that cause poor digestion.
Insulin Resistance
Coconut oil protects
against insulin resistance, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. MCFA fats are small enough to be absorbed into
the cells where they're quickly converted to energy. It is this process that
not only reduces the amount of fat we pack into storage, but improves insulin
sensitivity.
Immunity
Coconut oil is made up of
healthy fats lauric acid, caprylic acid and capric acid which contain
antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral prosperities to boost the immune system.
Lauric acid contains the highest concentration of MCFA fatty acids,
approximately 75 per cent. The body turn this fat into monolaurin which is
claimed to help heal viruses such as herpes, influenza, cytomegalovirus, and helicobacter
pylori.
Skin
Coconut oil keeps the
skin's connective tissues strong, which prevents sagging, wrinkles and makes an
amazing moisturizer. Apply coconut oil directly to your skin to soften the
appearance of fine lines or use it daily on your face and body for a healthy
glow, helps in treating various skin problems including psoriasis, dermatitis,
eczema and other skin conditions. Be sure you use virgin coconut oil with no additives.
Make Up Remover
Coconut oil solubilizes or breaks up water-resistant substances used in eye shadow, most liners and mascara, releasing them from the skin and lashes
Hair
Coconut oil is used in a staggering amount of
shampoos, conditioners, and hair care products. The reason - Its low molecular
weight and straight linear chain, coconut oil can effectively penetrate the
hair shaft to reduce protein loss, leaving it nourished and healthy which helps
with things such as dandruff , frizz, dry or brittle hair, great used as hot
oil treatments as well.
Relaxation and Spa
Coconut oil makes a wonderful massage oil, with no slimy or sticky residues, it leaves you focused on how relaxed and at ease you feel post massage.
Add small amount to warm bath water for all over moisture and relaxation to leave your skin looking and feeling smooth, refresh and reenergized.
Head Lice
Coconut Oil works well as a head lice treatment,
since it is deadly to lice. Try warming up the oil and doing a hot oil
treatment on yours/your child’s hair. You might also add some oil to the
laundry as a preventative.
Coconut shampoo and conditioner will also kill the
lice and any new nymphs as they hatch. If you continue to wash hair with
coconut oil shampoo and coconut oil conditioner, it will make hair shiny,
manageable, and the pesky critters will no longer be attracted to hair.
Heart Disease and High Blood Pressure
Coconut oil is high in natural saturated fats.
Saturated fats not only increase the healthy cholesterol (known as HDL) in your
body, but also help to convert the LDL “bad” cholesterol into good
cholesterols.
By Increasing the HDL’s in the body, it helps promote
heart health, and lower the risk of heart disease.
UTI and Kidney Infection & Protects the Liver
Coconut oil has been known to clear up and heal
urinary (UTI) and kidney infections. The MCFA’s in the oil work as a natural
antibiotic by disrupting the lipid coating on bacteria and killing them. Also
there is a study showing that coconut oil directly protected the liver from
damage.
Coconut water also helps hydrate and support the
healing process. Doctors have even injected the coconut water to clear up
kidney stones. Coconut is a super powerful food!
Gum Disease and Tooth Decay (oil pulling)
Oil pulling with coconut oil has been used for
centuries as a way to cleanse the mouth of bacteria and help heal periodontal
disease. Coconut oil is one of the most effective oils for oil pulling due to
its high concentration of antibacterial MCFA’s.
By swishing the oil in your mouth the oil denatures
the bacteria and sticks to it. Removing oral bacteria greatly reduces your risk
of periodontal disease. If you want to heal your gums and repair your teeth, it’s
recommend coconut oil pulling 3x a week for 20 minutes a day.
*IMPRORTANT FACT – refined or processed coconut oil can be bleached, over-heated, and chemically
processed to increase its shelf-life. Processing the oil changes the chemical
makeup and the fats are no longer good for you!
